PLACES TO VISIT FROM LOU CASTEOU

Lou Casteou is situated in the Esterel mountains between Cannes and St. Tropez, 40 minutes drive from Nice airport and just 5 minutes from many large sandy beaches, excellent sports facilities, boutiques and restaurants.

CANNES

Famed for its film festival, Cannes might be synonymous with A-list glamour but you’ll also discover a city rich in culture as well as one of the loveliest marinas in France. A Riviera town, life in Cannes revolves around the harbour which still boasts fishing boats as well as the super-yachts of the super-rich.

As well as stunning views over the Côte d’Azur, those who make it to the top of the hills on which Cannes sprawls will find the remains of a fortified tower and the 12th-century Chapel of St Anne.

Neighbouring St Honorat has been home to monks since AD410 and the ruins of the 11th century monastery can still be seen. The current group of ecclesiasts divide their time between prayer and wine production.

A selection of charming restaurants and bars are to be found in Vieux Port, which sits just beyond the Allées des Stars, a street decorated with handprints left in the pavement by visiting actors. The old port itself is enchanting, with its odd medley of luxury boats and tiny fishing vessels, rows of palm trees and fragrant flower market.

ST. TROPEZ

For decades St Tropez has been recognised as one of Europe's most glamorous, sultry resorts. The massive success of Brigitte Bardot's 'And God Created Woman' made St Tropez a household name around Europe.

The best beach in the area is 3 miles out of town at the Plage de Tahiti. This sandy beach boasts plenty of bars, cafés and a range of watersports and is popular with everyone from jet set wannabes through to families. Naturists prefer the string of beaches to the west of St Tropez where clothes are very much optional.

Back from the sea, Place des Lices offers relaxed bars. Take a seat at one of the square's benches and watch old men playing petanque in a scene that has not changed for centuries. Check out the impressionist paintings at the Musée de l'Annonciade (place Grammont), or soak up the dramatic views from the 17th-century citadel.

NICE

Nice’s prime position on the Côte d’Azur is its biggest draw. Unlike many of the area's other sandy beaches, Nice's beach is stony and rugged.

Nice has museums and galleries aplenty, as well as decadent nightlife and the distinct Niçoise culture to gorge on. The best way of getting to know the city is by wandering its network of alleys and lanes in the historic Old Town. Shake off the less adventurous tourists and discover the city’s finer bars and restaurants. Meanwhile, Le Chateau, or Castle Hill, is a must-see for its lush vegetation, crumbling ruins, and splendid views of the city below.

In the city centre, spend some time in Nice’s largest civic space, Place Masséna, whose redevelopment presaged a drive to refashion the city. Nowadays, traffic-clogged roads have given way to parks, gardens and tram lines. The new Allianz Riviera stadium is a similarly stunning feat of ecological architecture, producing more energy than it consumes.

ESTEREL MOUNTAINS

Lying between St-Raphaël and La Napoule, this low-lying, ravined mountain range meets the sea in a series of promontories, deep creeks, headlands and beaches, its fire-red colours forming a striking contrast with the indigo blue of the Mediterranean. Just off the coast lie thousands of rocks and islets covered with green lichen, while submerged reefs are clearly visible underwater. Perfect for swimming in the sea, this area also boasts a number of uncrowded footpaths which also make it ideal for walking.

The Esterel massif offers walkers a perfumed, preserved and colourful vegetation. It forms a magnificent view and many leisure activities are offered: hiking and horse riding, mountain biking, climbing, etc. Vehicles are allowed on about 42 km of road, circuits have been arranged for mountain biking (100 km of marked mountain bike circuits), horse riders (100 km of horse riding trails) and for hikers (40 km of walking trails).

SAINTE-CROIX

The Lac de Sainte-Croix is a leisure lake and reservoir within the Regional Natural Park of Verdon. There are various places of interest along the shores of the lake and in the immediate vicinity.

The most popular places with visitors to the Lac de Sainte-Croix include Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon and Bauduen: Sainte-Croix de-Verdon is a small town with several restaurants to the east of the lake (see Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon for details) and Bauduen is a historic village on the shores to the south of the lake

Nestled on a hillside on the shores of the immense lake of St. Croix, Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon is a true haven of peace. In a landscape of striking beauty where nature is queen, the village curled up on itself enjoys an exceptional location.

Perched at 513 meters above sea level, the village moved to the shores of the lake in the 16th century. Formerly placed in plain, it was drowned. Traces of its existence date back to Prehistory. The Middle Ages were marked by the bishops of Riez who baptized the commune with its current name.
